Bio/Resume

photo of artist

I was born and raised in the great Midwest (Iowa and Kansas). I showed an interest in art at an early age, drawing, painting and making constructions of all sorts. I attended the University of Texas in Austin, where I received a B.S. in Chemistry in 1973. Despite my interest in the arts, I decided to pursue a career as a research scientist, and received a Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1978. Throughout college and graduate school, I continued to draw and paint in my spare time. In 1978 I moved to Little Rock, Arkansas for postdoctoral study, where my interest in photography took root, largely because my laboratory had its own darkroom. In 1982 I moved to Chicago, to take a position at the University of Chicago, where I did research until 1993, when I left to tutor children on the south side of Chicago for eight years. With the advent of digital photography in the late ‘90’s, my interest in photography was renewed, and in 2003 I earned a Certificate in Digital Photography from Columbia College, Chicago. Since then, I have shown my work in numerous solo and group shows throughout the country and internationally. I currently live in the West Town neighborhood of Chicago with my patient and very supportive wife, Dr. Charmane Eastman.
